When I started teaching over thirteen years ago, the California State Standards required that students learned to read in first grade. Since that time, the state standards have been changed and now require that students start to read in kindergarten.
Kindergarten used to be a place to develop social skills with free choice, play time, and center based activities. As that very important developmental year become more academic-based to meet the new standards, teachers have noticed that many students are entering first grade unprepared socially.
Preschool is a very important start to your child's future. Working closely with several kindergarten teachers, I have developed a program that will balance the social development of children with the very basic academic needs now essential for entering kindergarten. With a maximum of 12 children per class, we offer a 6:1 child to teacher ratio.
Most importantly, kids need to be kids. They will have over 18 years to spend in school, and this should be a time to have fun and explore life. Each day is full of new discoveries for young children. We look forward to nurturing your child's social, emotional, and cognitive development.
